The Industry Welcomes Calls for Action on Economic Growth
Brussels, 18th March 2008
The PSI Alliance welcomes the Slovenian Presidency’s efforts to promote growth and competitiveness, and calls on European governments to boost Public Sector Information (PSI) re-use as an engine for economic development.
The PSI Alliance calls on public and private sector companies to work together effectively to ensure that PSI can assume its proper role as a key contributor to a vibrant, knowledge-driven European economy, offering benefits to consumers and users, and the public and private sectors.
The PSI Alliance welcomes in particular the European Council’s statements concerning the need to remove barriers to the free movement of public research-generated intellectual property to create a genuine internal market for knowledge.
Nikolaus Futter, one of the founding members of the Alliance, endorsed the Council’s statement:
"The PSI Alliance believes that public sector information is still a largely untapped resource in the EU. If its re-use was more straightforward then this would not only encourage economic growth but also far wider socio-economic benefits such as employment and technological innovation. Governments are, by definition, the only suppliers of PSI, and their commitment to economic growth and international competitiveness is too often undermined by their own barriers to PSI access."
