The International Synposium "Access to Environmental Information - Freedom of information in favour of environmental protection?"
18th - 19th June 2009
This symposium will be held by the Brandenburg State Commissioner for Data Protection and Access to Information 18/19 June 2009. The conference is being co-organized by the Alcatel-Lucent Stiftung, the German Association for Law and Information Technology and the Independent Institute for Environmental Concerns. It is sponsored by Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt. The International Symposium will take place in the Steigenberger Hotel Sanssouci, Allee nach Sanssouci 1, 14471 Potsdam.
Engagement for the environment requires information. Public bodies are obliged to release this information under the Environmental Information Act in order to support the citizens' commitment to environmental protection. In practice, the act's implementation gives rise to several questions: What exactly does "information about the environment" mean? To what extent are private bodies subject to the act? How far does the Environmental Information Act overlap with the general Freedom of Information legislation?
